Quote

I would rather be ashes than dust. I would rather my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze, than it should be stifled in dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, with every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. - Chris Patten, the last Governor of Hong Kong, quoted in Hong Kong Policy Address 1996 (the last address before 1997 handover to China)

The Fall of Woke Culture - How a good idea turns ugly

We know that the "Woke Culture" in the United States began as a progressive movement, supporting gender diversity, opposing racial discrimination, and advocating for equality and inclusion. Initially, not many people opposed it. Later, things gradually went off course. When these ideals started being used as a standard for judging morality, forcing people to take a stand, and even leading to cancellations, ostracism, or losing a job over a single misspoken word, facing spontaneous outpouring of criticism, insults on social media, or having one’s public image tarnished, businesses and schools became afraid to speak the truth. Over time, even those who originally supported these ideals began to feel exhausted. By 2024, woke culture had become a target of widespread criticism in American society, fueling the rise of the right wing. This phenomenon, where a consensus turns into coerced pressure, gradually becomes a form of political correctness, leading to public resentment. Excessive correctness ends up creating more enemies for itself.
